HGTV Goes High Tech with its New Smart Home

HGTV's new smart home 2013 (formerly named green home) will be open for entry from April 11 to May 5. They changed the name from green to smart home because, besides the usual green home technologies, the house now also features many exiting and emerging smart home technologies.

About the new smart home technologies

In a way to you can compare it to the smart phone evolution, applied to a home. HGTV's new smart home utilizes many technologies that will make your life easier. Such as automated lightning, climate and security controls.

A specific example of the automation in the house is found in the bathroom. The house can remember individual family members and adjust the shower temperature according to their personal preferences. You can also monitor and adjust the home's systems with your smart phone or device. Forgot to turn of the lights? No problem, your smart device will come to the rescue.

The location

The home is located in Paradise Key, Jacksonville beach, Florida which boasts a wonderful year round climate. It's close to the beach, surrounded by the natural beauty of the landscape and resides in a lively family friendly neighborhood. If you you ever feel like going on a shopping spree then downtown Jacksonville is the place to go, which is only a short 20 minute drive away.

About the home

HGTV calls it a "coastal cottage style home". It features an interior of around 2,400 square feet with an exterior of more then 1,000 square feet. But words can only describe so much (this being a classic case where a picture truly is worth a thousand words), so here are some pictures...

The living room features 3 flat screen high def. flat screen TVs. When they're not used they are automatically covered by artwork.

A nice feature of the master bedroom is the retractable glass wall with the pool just a few steps away. It also has it's own bathroom.

With the nice year round climate of Jacksonville the pool won't go unused. It's complete with lightning and temperature control.

Surfing is alive and well in the community with the beach just a short walk away. You can choose your weapon of choice in the garage.

Final thoughts

With this new home HGTV has now put smart technology in the spotlight. With all the smart technology conquering the world now I feel that HGTV has made a very good choice changing the theme of their spring home giveaway. They definitely know how to keep up with the trends.
